Cinemas embrace social distancing by transforming their parking lots into drive-ins

Entertainment venues have been hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 shutdown. But when forced to close, some businesses lock-up and anxiously wait for the all clear, while others attempt to think their way out of the problem. Cinemas in Texas and California have done just that by converting their parking lots into old school drive-in cinemas for the social distancing age.

Every evening, movie fans can park in the theater parking lot and enjoy a film from the COVID-safe confines of their cars. Screenings are free and customers can order food from the theater’s kitchen. And the opening weekend was a sell-out! As Field of Dreams once told us, “If you build it, they will come”.

This is a difficult time for everyone, so we’ve made it our goal to find a way to spread positivity within our community while sharing in the responsibility of social distancing during the crisis.
